I once read he liked chicken noodle soup... and he has said his favourite drink is red wine.

Why aren't The Darkness playing in my town?

Because, they simply don't have time. They'll play the main cities of whatever country they're in, with the biggest venues that they think they can sell, as they finished the pub circuit quite a while ago.

Daniel Francis Hawkins was born on the 12 of December, 1976. He was the second child in the Hawkins family, younger brother to Justin. His parents, Harry and Sandy Hawkins, later had another child- Suzie. The Hawkins children attended Yoxley Primary school. When he was about 8, Dan took up playing the drums, up turning Roses tins and hanging the lids from his wardrobe rack, until his parents bought him a £100 drum kit.

Dan then proceeded to become an extremely bright student (not Straight As, despite the rumours)at Kirkley High School, where he met one of his best friends, Ed Graham, drummer for The Darkness. Dan also took up playing guitar, and he is entirely self taught- he can't read music or tab, he learnt by ear. Dan and his family moved to a Pub 'The Fighting Cocks' and Harry converted an old outside toilet block into a soundproof rehersal room for Justin and Dan.

Dan was also a promising young footballer, and he showed great talent on the field, but unfortunatly, at the age of 15, he suffered a hamstring injury, ruining any chance of him having a football involved career.

Dan left school at 16, already determined to become a sucessful musician, despite his good grades. He and Justin formed a band called Vital Signs, with Justin on lead guitar, and Dan on vocals.

Dan then left East Anglia, moving to London, obtaining a flat in Hammersmith, and he formed a band with some people he met, then he decided to sack them all. Dan became a session musician, doing this because it was the only way to make any money. He described this experience as 'soul destorying'.Meanwhile, he also placed an advert in the music press, and one correspondant was Scottish bassist Frankie Poullain. They met up, and had frequent jamming sessions in Dan's flat, and Justin semi-moved in, sleeping on the couch, while Ed would visit on weekends. The first time they all played together was in Dan's flat, and in Dan's own words, something just 'clicked'.

However, Ed still refused to move from Suffolk, so Dan formed an ill-fated prog rock band, by the name of 'Empire'. Dan was on vocals and guitar, Justin on keyboards, and Frankie on bass. Dan became obsessed with his bands sucess, and he became an insomniac, lying awake at night, angry his band weren't as big as AC/DC or Queen. He insisted on re-stringing the guitars before each gig, he doing it himself because he was the only one who knew how. He descirbed himself as' A total fucking nightmare', becoming a slave drive, and the band averaged about 2 hours of sleep a night. Dan's parents worried about him, and paid for him and Justin to go on a family holiday to Turkey. Dan continued to worry however, and gave himself acid indigestion.

Soon Dan and Justin started working with manager, Sue Whitehouse, and then Frankie made the choice of moving to Venezuela, and Justin and Dan both returned back to thier parents in  Lowestoft.

It was Millennium Eve, and the boys were in their Auntie's pub, The Swan, at a family-only gathering. There was Karaoke being held, and Justin jumped up on the stage as soon as he heard Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody playing. He didn't actually sing a single note whilst on stage, he danced. Halfway through when he had run out of ideas, he started up a keep fit routine!

 It was then that Dan realised his brother's potential. He clearly could entertain. Dan went over to Justin and exclaimed- 'I know! YOU be the frontman for the band!' Justin agreed.

Thus-

It was the start, of The Darkness taking over the world.

Dan can play guitar, drums, bass and keyboards.

His father was a builder.

He has his Thin Lizzy shirts made by a woman in Japan, some of the logos are made out of tropical fish skins. But he doesn't wear the green ones much.

During the more recent gigs Dan has to do first aid on stage- he has mini plasters hanging off his mic stand, which he applies to his left hand as he cuts his fingers on his guitar strings.

His Gibson Black Beauty was originally built for Jimmy Page, but was too heavy so Dan got it instead.

Dan refused to do the final solo on the cliff face during Love Is Only a Feeling, as he isn't too good with heights.
